When do women watch porn?

Women do tend to watch porn less than men, but they do watch it – and enjoy it, too. In a survey done in 2014, 46% of men said they watched porn weekly and 16% of women said the same.

How much those numbers will have change as internet access has boomed and the pandemic got us all bored is hard to know.

It does only give us some headline number, but a study done by Marie Claire in 2015 dived into the nitty gritty of women’s porn watching habits. The survey found that 71% or women watched porn at least monthly, with 10% of that number indulging in some sexy scenes daily.

Clearly, there’s an appetite for getting off while interacting with porn.

What types of porn do women watch?

Women have a tendency towards watching lesbian porn – 44% told the same Marie Claire survey that they watched girl on girl action. To put that into perspective, around 21% of straight men watch gay porn.

63% of women watch straight porn and 90% of all porn is watched through online videos.

How else do women get their kinky kicks? Nearly half of them will listen to sex stories or read erotica. It’s not that surprising – women are known to be less stimulated by visuals and more about a complete sensual experience.

The women surveyed had concerns about the porn they watch, too.  Over half of them still had concerns about the porn industry and how it depicts women. Women who watch porn want to get off but do it ethically.

Why do women watch porn?

Women are consuming porn and enjoying it, but what exactly is the reason behind it?

First, it’s worth knowing when men watch porn so we can understand if women are the same or different. In a recent study in Romania, psychologists found that men tend to watch porn to:

  • Increase their sex drive
  • Conform to social expectations
  • Make up for being single

However, women in that study tended to say they watch porn to improve how good they are in bed.

Hopping back over to those Marie Claire results, nearly three-quarters of women said they watched porn to help them cum – which makes sense. 39% of women also said that they watch porn to get ideas they can use in the bedroom.

The basic brain wiring for men and women is the same. When we’re stimulated, neurons start to fire and we respond to these changes. Watching porn gets “mirror neurons” firing, which mean your body’s reactions mirror the stimulus you’re experiencing.

Basically, men’s mirror neurons make them understand the physical reactions of others while women’s tend to mirror feelings. There’s no real data on it, but you’d assume that men are into the visuals of porn while women are more into the story of the sex they’re watching.

How does porn affect women and sex?

Women are watching porn and enjoying it, but what does their porn watching tell us about them and their sex?

Norwegian scientists talked to 398 couples and asked them all about their sex lives and the role porn plays in it. Of those couples, 15% of them watched porn together – they don’t go into the reasons but have you ever tried porn while you’re fucking?!

Another 3% of couple said that only the woman watched porn in the relationship, so it’s not always about the men wanting more…

There was also a study done asking American and Hungarian women about their attitudes and response to porn. You’re probably not surprised to know that they found younger women were more into watching porn and were generally more interested in sex.

Out of all the women that were asked in this study, most of them said that it was a shortcut to getting turned and that they found it easier to cum when they watch porn.

They were also asked how it affected their everyday sex lives. Interestingly, the women who watched porn also found it easier to get turned on when they were having sex with their partner. It’s also useful to know that they also said it was easier to cum.

Sounds like porn has a way of improving sex for the women who watch it.

Why do women watch porn?

This is one of those questions that shows us how men and women are fundamentally different. Which is no bad thing – sex would be pretty boring if we all wanted the same thing.

At base, it is still about sex and getting turned on. Porn helps women get turned on and reach orgasm quicker, which is what most men would probably say, too. The also use it for education so they can take new and interesting things into the bedroom.

We know that women are still concerned about the ethics of porn and creator-made porn can break down those barriers. Watching porn made by an independent creator means they know the stars are getting paid directly and are fully consenting.
