Is Making Your Own Porn Feminist

Feminism has a lot of different ideas packed around it. From women who will die on the hill of their feminist beliefs to women who think it’s a load of nonsense, most women have some type of opinion on it.

Why are we discussing feminism here? SinParty is a pornography site and the debate about whether porn is feminist or not is as old as feminism itself.

When people are considering becoming a creator on SinParty, there are lots of questions they ask themselves, from whether to tell their family, what happens if the boss finds out, and even if it matches with their feminist ideals.

We believe being a creator on SinParty is definitely feminist and we’re here to tell you why. We’re going to explore:

  • What feminism is
  • The arguments for and against pornography being feminist
  • Why we argue that SinParty is a feminist creator’s platform

What does feminism mean?

Behind feminism is the idea that men and women should be equal. For that to be the driving force, we have to accept that currently, the sexes aren’t equal. We can see that fact in many places, such as the gender pay gap and the lack of women in positions of power.

Feminism isn’t about hating men. To be a feminist means you want men and women to have the same opportunities, to not have careers or hobbies closed off to them. That means that women should have no difficulties being a structural engineer, whilst a man should be able to be a nurse or a kindy teacher.

We’re not talking about burning bras or huge shoulder pads here. There is no one definition of feminine and no one way that a feminist woman should look. If a woman wants to wear six-inch heals and a full face of make-up every day she has the freedom to, with no judgement. Want to spend the day with no bra and hair scraped in a bun? That’s also no problem.

The premise of feminism is to break down the structures that have been put in place by a society that’s been dominated by men – the patriarchy. Issues such as women being asked the clothes they were wearing when they were raped or something as simple as women’s clothes still not being designed with pockets – these are how society is structured to control women.

How does all of this relate to porn?

Is pornography feminist or part of the patriarchy?

Feminists against porn

There are some feminists who will argue that all pornography is violence against women. The feminist Catharine McKinnon says that all women in porn are in some way coerced into it and that it’s the “subordination” of women.

Other arguments against pornography are that is leads to women being abused by men. It’s said that porn also normalises unnatural body images for both men and women. There are some studies that suggest that pornography encourages ideas of violence and could possibly lead to paedophilia – although the study could only prove that there’s a link and not that porn was the cause.

Feminists for porn

An alternative view of porn comes from sex-positive feminism. This is basically the idea that women are capable of giving their own informed consent to be in pornography and have agency over their own body.

It’s important to recognise that there can be negative sides to the porn industry, like nearly every industry out there, but we shouldn’t dismiss all porn because of that. Women can star in, direct, and even watch porn because they choose to and enjoy it and it’s not all about what men want.

What is feminist pornography

Not all porn is seen as being feminist. There are certain elements of a porn video that will determine whether it can be seen as feminist, but as viewers we can’t always know about them. Here are some of the ideas:

  • The woman is at the center of the porn video and it focuses on her pleasure and desires
  • Actors give willing consent, give permission for each sex act, and can choose to say no
  • Bodies represented in the video are representative, such as BBW, black, or disabled
  • The working environment is clean and welcoming
