Who watches gay porn?
Gay porn is a different beast to straight porn. First, the audience for male gay porn is different. The primary viewers of gay porn are gay men, followed by straight men, and then women – usually straight.
There isn’t a lot of data about why people watch gay porn. When talking about the prevalence of straight men watching gay porn, a social sciences researcher working out of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Doctor Sam Miles, suggested, “If you think about it, there’s no reason why they wouldn’t.
“Some gay men watch straight porn, so it should not come as a surprise that the reverse can also be true. It stands to reason that some of these men want a different ‘flavor’ sometimes.”
Surprisingly, around 37 percent of viewers of gay male porn are women. It’s the category of porn watched most by women over the age of 45.
What gay porn videos are popular?
As of June 2022, the top five most clicked gay porn categories on SinParty are:

With the first two being surrounded by some controversy, that we’ll cover in a moment.
Gay porn star Trenton Ducati told In magazine that “The daddy/boy stuff is everywhere… Bondage is doing very well right now as well.” Foot fetishes are also common, he notes, along with anything else that will make a porn video stand out.
Twinks are another common theme in gay porn. Not quite sure what a “twink” is? Here’s the Urban Dictionary definition to make it clear – because the Cambridge Dictionary wasn’t quite so fun.
The youthful, effeminate look of gay men is an age-old aesthetic. Although it can be a troubling one in some regards, it definitely thrives as a trop in the gay porn industry.
2022 Gay porn update
With the growing influence of creator sites like SinParty, gay porn categories aren’t as black and white anymore.
Porn watchers are able to find exactly what they want with their favorite creators so tastes are becoming ever more specific. While there will always be space for the broader categories, creators need to find their niche.
A successful SinParty creator, UnderXiaoQiang, told us about his experience of changing trends in gay porn. One observation he noted was about Chinese porn watchers, “Gays are watching top penetrating bottom and instead of cumming, he pees instead. Apparently it’s a new trend and very visual.”
“Even using a remote vibrator to turn the cam performer on with loud moaning isn’t enough anymore. Creators are developing their twerking to make performances visually more pleasing to consumers,” he went on to say.
What hasn’t changed, though, is content length – viewers are still looking for long-form content; “Compare to nowadays and our fast media world. I guess people still need time to build up that edge,” he mused.
What are the prominent issues in the gay porn industry?
As it stands, there are three main concerns within the gay porn industry. One is an issue that goes back decades and the other two are more recent developments. Here’s a quick rundown of each, which we’ll cover in more detail in future gay porn blog posts.
Going bareback
Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, wearing condoms in gay porn became the norm. In more recent times, some porn studios have decided that rigorous health screening and regular tests for HIV/AIDS is all that’s needed.
The concern is that seeing this behavior in porn could influence gay men to replicate it. The Gay Man’s Health Project ran two surveys four years apart that hinted that men were influenced by bareback porn to not wear condoms. Six percent of respondents said this was the case in 2012 whilst 13 percent did in 2016.
Gay for pay
Along with the trend to watch seemingly straight men partake in homosexual sex, there is the trend of “gay for pay”. This is when a straight porn star will do gay sex, blowjobs, etc, to get paid.
The controversy is two-pronged. First, gay men can find it harder to get into an industry that’s dominated by straight men just in it for the money. Second, there are reports from some that those going “gay for pay” are actually homophobic in their attitudes to their work.
Fair pay
In early 2020, gay porn star Joey Mills tweeted that all male gay porn stars should accept no less that $1,000 per scene. Some porn models report getting paid $3-500 per scene which can take a full day to film.
The models need to work on their appearance and spend time doing their own personal promotions, as well as perform in scenes.
What does the future hold for gay porn?

In our chat with UnderXiaoQiang, he noted that a trend that’s emerging in Asia is verbal abuse. There are lots of men who are asking for their creators to make aggressive, verbally abusive videos for them.
“People ask me if I can do it, but I’m not good at it. People pay lots money to get verbally abused by someone,” He explains.
On a more general level, he explained, “Hunky guys with big cock are still popular, but creativities are definitely more valued now a days and more competitive.” Especially in the realms of male content creators, it can be hard to come up with fresh ideas, poses, and general content ideas yet it’s the best way to mark yourself out from the crowded market.
