Is masturbation good for women’s health?
When did you last get yourself off? If you’re a SinParty creator, it was possibly rather recently, and caught on camera. Is all that masturbating healthy?
You maybe heard boys get told they’d go blind if they beat the meat when you were younger. For women, we’ve tended to be told that masturbation is dirty or rude or not needed, or some other bullshit.
We’re not down with myths and sexual shaming, so we’re going to look at the facts of female masturbation. We’ll be going over:
- The physical benefits of masturbating
- Why masturbating is good for your mental health
- What women think about masturbation
- How often you should be getting yourself off
Are there health benefits when women masturbate?
Whether you decide you go for manual stimulation with your own hands, use a dildo, or a vibrator direct to your clit, you’re definitely not harming yourself.
There are actually some great health benefits of making yourself cum. Your fingers aren’t going to get you pregnant and you won’t get an STI or UTI from your favorite sex toy.
We should probably qualify that. When you use your hands for masturbating, make sure you wash them first and you’ve not touched dick with precum or cum on it. Same with your sex toys – keep them clean, especially if you share them with anyone else.
Need more reasons why masturbating is healthy? Check these out:
- Masturbating, and orgasms in general, are great for your pelvic floor and anal muscles
- Period pains and cramps can be relieved or made lighter when you cum often
- A woman can burn up to 3.1 calories per minute in the build up to an orgasm
- After learning how to masturbate and cum solo, more women are able to get the O with a partner
On that last point, famous sex educator of the 1960s and 70s Betty Dodson pioneered this idea. She’d run classes with 15 women, each naked and equipped with a Hitachi Magic Wand who’d learn to cum so they could get the same pleasure with their partner.
Is masturbating healthy for the mind?
The vast, vast majority of the time, masturbating is completely positive for your mental health.
Who doesn’t feel better after an orgasm?
When a woman cums, a whole load of happy hormones are released. These hormones are called endorphins, which give the same feeling as opioids. That’s a helluva a natural high you can give yourself!
Long-term, an increase in endorphins can help stave off depression and chronic headaches.
Regularly masturbating is also great for stress relief and releasing sexual tension. If you’ve ever been in a long-distance relationship, you’ll know how important this is.
Masturbation can also improve your body image. When you get to know your body better, you’ll feel more confident in yourself in general, when you’re creating your SinParty content, and when you’re with your partner.
In a study of Portuguese women, it was found that:
- Women who masturbate often had a wider range of sex moves
- Had more fantasies
- In general, they found it easier to cum alone or with someone else
Can masturbating be unhealthy?
We should sound a note of slight caution here, because not all masturbation is healthy.
It is possible that cumming can become a compulsive behavior, which isn’t healthy. If you find yourself:
- Masturbating so often it gets in the way of your work
- Playing with yourself so much that you neglect relationships with friends and family
- Pleasuring yourself so much that your vulva becomes sore, painful, or swollen
Then you may have deeper issues that masturbating is a symptom of, and we suggest seeking medical help.
Do women view masturbating as healthy?
Obviously, this is going to be subjective, but we reckon the conversation about female masturbation is getting better.
It’s interesting to try and understand where negative ideas about female masturbation come from.
In a survey of German women, it was found that of the 5.5 percent of them who’d never once played with themselves, the two primary reasons were “I hardly ever feel sexual desire” and “sex is a partner-only thing”.
The study out of Portugal we looked at a little earlier also found that a small minority of women associated masturbation with guilt or shame.
Three factors that seem to influence people when it comes to how they see self-stimulation are:
- How and where people learn about masturbating and how to do it
- How people learn about and internalize the idea of masturbation being “wrong” but also enjoying it
- How people come to terms with the social ideas of masturbating with the pleasure they get from it
This study out of the USA also found that women found it harder to come to terms with enjoying masturbation than men did.
How often is masturbating healthy?
Think about a female SinParty creator – how many times will she cum? Even if we accept that not all creators will cum all of the time, there’s a lot of masturbation going on.
The models and creators on this platform might not exactly be representative of the female population as a whole, though. With that in mind, we’ve looked for some other facts to see how often women in general get hands-on with themselves.
Back to women in Portugal that we looked at before – in that study 91% of women had masturbated at least once in their lives. The study of German woman had a slightly higher rate of masturbating women, at 94.5%.
In that same study, nearly 27% of women play with themselves two to three times a week and another 26.3% went for it at least once a week. More than nine in ten of these same women still masturbated when they were in a relationship.
The desire to pull out the dildo doesn’t stop with age, either. In survey of middle-aged women who were going through menopause, 75% said that sexual function was moderately or extremely important.
How often women cum when they masturbate is up for debate. One study done in 2020 reported that women cum 95% of the time when they do it themselves. The German study we’ve already looked at reported that just over 50% of women cum every time they masturbate.
What seems rather unfortunate, is that nearly 8% of these German women never got an orgasm when they masturbated.
Is it healthy to masturbate when you have a partner?
Should you still masturbate in a relationship? Why on Earth wouldn’t you?
In a survey of married women, it was found that the ones who played with their clit, vagina, or ass to get an orgasm:
- Had more orgasms in general
- Had a higher sex drive
- Were more confident
- Were more satisfied with their marriage and sex life
- Took less time to orgasm
When compared to the married women who didn’t masturbate.
Why do women masturbate?
To cum, or at least really fucking enjoy it. Next question.
Actually, let’s pause on this for a moment. We already know that the clitoris is the only part of the human body that’s only there for pure pleasure.
It’s theorized that when men masturbate, it serves some purpose to clear the balls of old sperm. There’s nothing that says a female orgasm has anything to do with reproduction, so why do we do it to ourselves?
When other primates – chimps, gorillas, orangutans – have been studied in the wild, it’s been seen that they all do masturbate. It’s a common action in both males and females.
One idea is that primates, including humans, masturbate, it helps society function. You’re fingering yourself to save society, women!
We know that self-given orgasms help us relieve stress and tension and the same seems to be true for our genetic cousins. Whilst the idea of emptying the balls of old sperm stands true for the males still, there’s no function pure pleasure for the females.
Is masturbating healthy for women?
Yes, it’s very healthy for women to masturbate. Not only does masturbation not cause any harm, it actually has some real benefits. From not being able to get pregnant to boosting your mood and your circulation, there are loads of reasons why masturbation is healthy.
Crack one out as often as you like; as long as it doesn’t hurt and your everyday life doesn’t get taken over by it, you’re golden.
Whether you’re single, in a relationship, or playing the field with a few different partners, it’s cool to cum on your own. Bring out the sex toys – there are plenty of them – or just use your own two fingers and have a great time, ladies.
