How Many Orgasms Can a Woman Have During Sex?
The female orgasm is as elusive as it is clouded in myth and mystery. At once we’re told that people with vaginas (we’re all for inclusivity but we’re going to use “women” as a shorthand for this article) only orgasm around 50-70 percent of the time in heterosexual encounters, yet the idea of women having multiple orgasms is also ingrained in us.
To understand women having multiple orgasms, we need to explore a few things first. We want to unravel some of the mystery that comes with making a woman come. To that end, we’re going to be covering:
- Exactly what a female orgasm is
- The different ways a woman can orgasm
- Why it can be difficult for a woman to come
- The numbers when it comes to the female orgasm
What is a female orgasm?
When a woman has an orgasm there will be an intense release of pleasure and sexual tension which will cause so physical reactions. The immediate changes in the body will be:
- The contraction of the vaginal muscles
- A pounding heart
- Increased blood pressure
And there are women who will release a liquid when they come. This is called “squirting”, which we looked at in an earlier article.
If that’s one orgasm, what about multiple orgasms for women? Before you can come again, there’s a recovery period after the rush that doctors call the refractory period. This is when you body sends a bunch of neurotransmitters to stabilise your body after the orgasm.
For women, this can happen super quick so you can start building to another orgasm whilst still in the moment. Unlucky for guys, this refractory period can be a lot longer so their chances of coming more than once during a sex session is a lot lower.
There’s two different types of multiple orgasm that women can experience:
- Multiple individual orgasms that can happen during a long sex session. This is when one orgasm fully fades before another builds up and is released
- Stacked orgasms is when the orgasms follow on from one another without a clear end. Women say it’s like waves of orgasm that are really intense
Now we know what a female orgasm is, how do you make them happen?
How to make a woman orgasm
Women orgasm in lots of different ways. Every woman is a little different, but in general you’ve got four ways of making a woman come:
- Stimulating the clitoris
- Vaginal sex
- Anal penetration
- Stimulating various erogenous zones
Don’t expect every woman to have a orgasm from every sex act. A 2015 survey found only six percent always come through penis in vagina sex and only 38 percent regularly had an orgasm through this stimulation. Dick in pussy isn’t the best way to make a woman come.
Women are most likely to come when they masturbate – they know their body best. Women who orgasm solo are more likely to come when having sex with a partner.
Most women will tell you that the way to make them orgasm is through foreplay; lots of it. This includes nipple play, stimulating the clitoris with your fingers, tongue, or sex toys, and potentially penetration.
There can be psychological barriers to orgasms and multiple orgasms – if a woman goes into sex thinking she’ll come multiple times it’s more likely to happen. To get them multiple orgasms, the stimulation needs to continue through the orgasm so she can ride the wave of pleasure again.
Why can’t some women orgasm?
All sounds easy? It’s not a simple process to achieve a female orgasm. Since everyone is different, the reasons for struggling to come will also be diverse.
Some reasons a woman can struggle to orgasm include:
- Past trauma, either physical or emotional, can make it hard for a woman to relax and let go enough during sex to be able to orgasm
- Psychological barriers can exist, whether she’s been shamed for enjoying sex or was taught that sex was wrong when she was young, to lots of other reasons
- Physical issues can make sex not enjoyable to downright painful, these aren’t the fault of the woman or her partner – sex should never be painful so head to the doctor if it is
- Lubrication can be a big issue that can link to physical reasons for not enjoying sex, use plenty of lube if things start chafing
What’s the most orgasms a woman ever had?
Tricky as it is to answer, there have been studies done and records awarded. Obviously, the longer the sex session goes on, the more potential for orgasm there is.
Work on achieving more orgasms through edging. It works for men and women, and you basically need to push yourself to juuuuust before you come and stop, do something else for a few minutes, then go back to that moment before the orgasm again. This will give you a more intense orgasm once you get there and can help women orgasm multiple times.
Some women don’t have to put in such efforts. At the Center for Marital and Sexual Studies in California a study was carried out to see how many orgasms a woman could have. They found one woman was able to come 134 times. In. An. Hour. That’s two and a quarter orgasms a minute.
The longest continuous orgasm for a woman apparently occurred in 1966. A woman came for a total for 45 seconds and her vaginal muscles contracted 25 times. She must have had some strong pelvic floor muscles.
How many orgasms can a woman have during sex?
Some women will be happy to be able to have just one orgasm through sex – one that’s near as good as she can give herself that is. Other women will expect to have multiple orgasms during a sex session that lasts a decent length of time.
To make a woman come, ask her what she wants and give it to her. Keep giving it to her to make her keep coming. It’s that simple, as long as you’re both happy to keep on going.
