What’s the history of cosplay?

The word cosplay was invented in 1984 by a Japanese journalist. The direct translation for dress-up in Japanese was much closer to “masquerade” which doesn’t do the idea justice, so the writer chose to call it cosplay and it’s stuck ever since.
